Vauxhall Removals Health and Safety Policy
Vauxhall Removals is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety in all removal and relocation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks, protecting our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public, and ensuring continual improvement in our safety performance across our operating area.
Policy Statement
Our objective is to conduct all removal services in a manner that prevents injury, ill health, and damage to property or the environment. Health and safety are integral to our planning, decision-making and day-to-day operations. We comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and codes of practice and aim to exceed minimum legal requirements wherever reasonably practicable.
Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to all employees of Vauxhall Removals, as well as subcontractors and temporary staff engaged on our behalf. It covers all removal and associated services, including packing, loading, transport, unloading, storage handling, office activities and visits to customer premises.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management has overall responsibility for health and safety within Vauxhall Removals. This includes providing clear leadership, adequate resources, competent supervision and a framework for continuous improvement. Managers will:
• Implement and review this policy and associated procedures.
• Ensure suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out and kept up to date.
• Provide appropriate training, instruction and information to all staff.
• Monitor working practices and take prompt action to address any deficiencies.
• Investigate accidents and near misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective measures.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees share responsibility for maintaining safe working conditions and must:
• Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
• Follow company safety procedures, safe systems of work and instructions provided by supervisors.
• Use equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.
• Report accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards without delay.
• Cooperate in the implementation of this policy, including attending training and safety briefings.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Vauxhall Removals will identify and assess risks associated with removal work, including manual handling, vehicle use, working in and around customer properties, use of lifting equipment, and handling of fragile or heavy items. Based on these assessments we will:
• Develop clear safe systems of work for packing, lifting, loading and unloading.
• Plan each removal job taking into account property layout, access, parking arrangements and any specific customer requirements.
• Ensure that high-risk activities are supervised by competent and experienced personnel.
• Review risk assessments regularly and whenever conditions, services or equipment change.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key aspect of removal work and presents a significant risk of injury if not managed properly. To minimise these risks we will:
• Provide training on correct lifting techniques and team handling methods.
• Use appropriate equipment such as trolleys, dollies, lifting straps and ramps where reasonably practicable.
• Assess items for weight, shape and stability before moving them.
• Avoid unnecessary lifting by planning vehicle loading and use of equipment carefully.
All tools and equipment used in the course of removals will be maintained in safe working condition, inspected regularly and withdrawn from use if faulty or damaged.
Vehicles and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are essential to our services and must be operated safely at all times. We will:
• Maintain vehicles in roadworthy condition through regular inspections and servicing.
• Ensure drivers are competent, appropriately licensed and familiar with the vehicles they operate.
• Plan routes with safety, traffic conditions and customer schedules in mind.
• Secure loads properly to prevent movement or damage during transit.
• Promote safe driving practices, including adherence to speed limits and avoidance of distractions.
Safety at Customer Premises
Our teams work in a wide variety of residential and commercial environments. When operating at customer premises we will:
• Conduct a dynamic assessment on arrival to identify specific hazards such as uneven surfaces, restricted access or shared entrances.
• Take reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors and members of the public from risk, including use of warning signs or barriers where appropriate.
• Protect property by using suitable coverings, floor protection and careful handling methods.
• Keep work areas as tidy as reasonably practicable to minimise trip and other hazards.
Information, Instruction and Training
Vauxhall Removals recognises that competence and awareness are fundamental to safe operations. We will provide:
• Induction training covering key health and safety procedures, emergency arrangements and reporting requirements.
• Job-specific training on manual handling, equipment use, vehicle operation and safe customer interaction.
• Refresher training and toolbox talks to reinforce safe behaviour and update staff on changes to procedures.
Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting
All accidents, incidents and near misses, regardless of severity, must be reported promptly to management. We will maintain accurate records and investigate all significant events to understand causes and prevent recurrence. Lessons learned will be communicated to relevant staff and reflected in updated procedures and training.
Consultation and Communication
We encourage open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in developing safer ways of working. Management will consult with staff on significant health and safety changes and share information on performance and upcoming initiatives.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy and associated procedures will be monitored for effectiveness through inspections, audits, feedback and performance data such as incident statistics. The policy will be reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legislation or best practice. Vauxhall Removals is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety, with the aim of achieving zero harm across all aspects of our removal services.
